Queer individuals face unique challenges in society, such as discrimination, margnilization, and oppression⎼ experiences that can be detrimental to one’s mental health.

Queer individuals may experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns due to discrimination and marginalization. At Denver Couples & Sex Therapy, our hope is to counteract these challenges by providing support for and validation of queer identities, experiences, and relationships.

There are several key components of LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy that make it distinct from other therapeutic approaches. These include, but are not limited to, recognizing and validating diverse identities, understanding intersectionality, challenging heteronormativity, and addressing the impact of discrimination and marginalization.

Queer identities encompass a broad range of experiences, including gender identity, sexual orientation, and more. Affirming therapy recognizes and validates the diversity of queer identities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, asexual, non-binary, pansexual, and other gender-nonconforming identities. Queer individuals may also experience discrimination and marginalization based on multiple aspects of their identities, such as race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. Affirming therapy recognizes the intersectionality of these experiences and works to create a space that acknowledges and respects these complex experiences.
Heteronormativity is the assumption that heterosexuality is the norm and that all individuals should conform to traditional gender roles. Affirming therapy challenges these assumptions and promotes acceptance of diverse expressions of gender and sexuality. Affirming therapy recognizes that discrimination and marginalization have a significant impact on the mental health of queer individuals. It provides a safe space for clients to explore, process, and heal these experiences.

The benefits of LGTBQIA+ Affirming Therapy are limitless but commonly include:

  • Improving Overall Mental Health
  • Increasing Self-Acceptance
  • Improving Experience within Relationship
  • Increasing Stress Tolerance and Resilence

At Denver Couples & Sex Therapy, our therapists are allies for the LGBTQIA+ community. Our team participates in continued education and training specific for the care of queer individuals, upholds strong standards of care for all clients (especially those of marginalized populations), and continuously evaluates and challenges personal biases, beliefs, and values to ensure the integrity of our care.

Yes, LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy can help with a variety of mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, self-esteem issues, and more. The therapist can provide strategies for managing these difficulties while also addressing any LGBTQIA+ related concerns.

Whether LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy is covered by insurance can depend on the specific insurance plan and the reason for therapy. Some plans may cover therapy if one person has a mental health diagnosis. It’s best to check with your insurance provider for specific information. Denver Couples & Sex Therapy does not accept insurance but is happy to provide a Super Bill for clients to submit to their insurance for potential reimbursement.

Depending on the client’s situation and preferences, LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy can involve family members or partners. This can help improve understanding, communication, and acceptance within the family or relationship.

The duration of LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy can vary depending on the individual’s needs and goals. Some people might see improvements after a few sessions, while others may continue therapy for several months or more.
