What is individual therapy?

Individual therapy, also known as psychotherapy, counseling, or personal therapy, is a therapeutic process that involves one-on-one sessions between a therapist and a client. The purpose of individual counseling is to facilitate personal growth, self-discovery, and emotional healing by enabling individuals to express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences in a safe and confidential environment.

The course of individual counseling often depends on the individual’s needs and goals. It can be short-term, addressing immediate issues like stress management or dealing with a crisis, or long-term, addressing complex psychological issues, ongoing personal growth, or dealing with chronic mental health conditions.

Our therapist’s role in this process includes providing support, understanding, and constructive feedback to help the client navigate through their issues, find effective ways to cope with challenges, and gain a better understanding of themselves and their relationships. Different therapeutic approaches such as Person-Centered Therapy, Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, Reality Therapy,  Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and others can be employed depending on the individual’s unique circumstances.

Individual counseling can be beneficial for a variety of issues, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relationship troubles, and personal growth. It can also aid in improving self-trust and esteem, bettering communication skills, and fostering more authentic living and decision making.

At Denver Couples & Sex Therapy, our individual counseling is tailored towards a multitude of focal points that cater to your overall well-being and relationship health. Our approach aims to cultivate your inner strength and resilience, providing you with the necessary tools to navigate life’s complexities.

Our therapists approach individual therapy from the lense of Emotionally Focused Individual Therapy, EFIT, and Attachment Theory. EFIT and Attachment Theory focus on the relationships and bonds between people and base themselves on the principle of individuals being innately relational.

As such, our team’s first priority is to help our individual clients better their interpersonal relationships, as well as their relationship with themselves. Our therapists are specially trained to provide the space for clients to deeply and vulnerably experience their emotions within the security of the therapeutic relationship.

Through this experience, our clients are able to reshape their inner world thus creating new meaning, processes, and way of engaging with others and the outside world. In this reshaping, we provide guidance on the meaning making process, understanding others’ perspectives, effective communication, and managing conflicts- enabling more fulfilling, satisfying relationships.

Through individual counseling, we also work with our clients to explore their attachment style and concerns,  increase intimacy in their relationships, identify and express emotional needs, and foster deeper connections with their intimate partner(s) or other relationships.

We also help clients to address, process, and heal childhood and attachment wounds- allowing for the deconstruction of any unresolved trauma or experiences that may be affecting the here and now. Our therapists are also skilled in managing mood or personality disorders within relationships, aiding you in understanding and managing your symptoms to minimize their impact on your relationship.

Our counseling emphasizes building an internal narrative of self-compassion. We hope to guide you towards understanding and forgiving yourself, radically accepting the complexeties and inevitabilities of life, and enhancing your self-trust, esteem and resilience.

We also seek to support clients in restoring or developing sexual health. We address any concerns or difficulties you may have, providing education and strategies to improve your sexual well-being. We provide a non-judgmental space for exploring new relationship dynamics or personal sexual proclivities and hope to help you navigate these aspects of your life with understanding, respect, and confidentiality.

As an all-inclusive, sex positive practice, we welcome all individuals, including those identifying as LGBTQIA+, non-monogamous, kinky, and more. See our LGBTQIA+ Affirming Therapy or Sex Therapy for more information.

Emotionally, individual therapy offers a safe, non-judgmental space for individuals to express their feelings freely. It aids in understanding and managing emotions, reducing symptoms of mental health conditions like anxiety and depression, and boosting overall emotional well-being.

Cognitively, therapy can help individuals identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns that may contribute to distress. Therapeutic approaches such as cognitive-behavioral therapy can provide tools for cognitive restructuring which can improve mental resilience and clarity. Therapy can also enhance self-awareness, leading to a better understanding of one’s needs, values, and life goals.

From a behavioral perspective, counseling can guide individuals towards more effective and beneficial coping strategies in the face of stress or adversity. It can foster more authentic decision-making skills, promote more fulfilling interpersonal relationships, and improve communication skills. Our therapist approach individual therapy from a holistic lens- prioritizing the whole person, down to developing and maintaining routines that support physical health, like regular exercise and good sleep hygiene.

Overall, individual counseling serves as a comprehensive tool that fosters mental health, promotes adaptive thinking and behavior, enhances interpersonal skills, and provides a foundation for personal growth and self-understanding.
